Overview
This guide walks you through every step needed to get Reco up and running on your Shopify store. The entire process takes just a few minutes.
Setup Checklist
| Step | Action | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Install the tracking pixel | Dashboard → Pixel section |
| 2 | Sync your product catalogue | Dashboard → Products section |
| 3 | Import historical orders (optional) | Settings page |
| 4 | Create your first component | Components page |
| 5 | Add the widget to your theme | Shopify Theme Editor |
Step 1: Install the Tracking Pixel
The tracking pixel is what allows Reco to monitor customer behaviour on your storefront.
- Open Reco and navigate to the Dashboard
- Find the Pixel section
- Click Install Pixel
- Wait for confirmation that the pixel is active
The pixel is extremely lightweight and loads asynchronously — it will not affect your store's performance or page load speed.
Step 2: Sync Your Product Catalogue
Reco needs to know about your products so it can display them correctly in the widget.
- On the Dashboard, find the Products section
- Click Sync Products
- Wait for the sync to complete
Product syncing also happens automatically in the background. If a product appears as "Unknown" in the widget, it will be detected and synced automatically on the next page load.
Step 3: Import Historical Orders (Optional)
If your store has existing order history, you can import it to generate recommendations right away — even before the pixel collects enough data.
- Go to the Settings page
- Find the Historical Data section
- Toggle historical data on
- Click Import Orders
Each import replaces the previous one. Make sure you're happy with your attribution mode setting before importing, as the mode affects how the data is processed.
Step 4: Create Your First Component
Components control how the recommendation widget looks and behaves.
- Go to the Components page
- Click Create Component
- Choose whether this should be a Global Default (shown on all product pages) or assigned to a specific product
- Customise the styling — colours, badges, card borders, text
- Save your component
You need at least one Global Default component for Reco to display recommendations across your store. Only one Global Default is allowed per store.
Step 5: Add the Widget to Your Theme
The final step is adding the Reco widget block to your Shopify theme.
- Open your Shopify admin
- Go to Online Store → Themes
- Click Customize on your active theme
- Navigate to a Product page template
- Add the Reco Recommendations block
- Position it where you'd like the widget to appear
- Save your theme
You're All Set!
Once all five steps are complete, Reco will begin tracking customer behaviour and displaying recommendations.
Recommendations improve over time as more purchase data is collected. If you imported historical data, you'll see recommendations right away.
